‘May she who gave you birth be happy.’ – Proverbs 23:25

Inspiring bible quotes for Mothering Sunday

Tomorrow is a very special day for many of us. The other day when I was with a group of people we were asked to say what ‘love’ meant to us. The first thing that popped into most of our heads was our mums. Mothers are so significant in our lives as they are incredibly influential. I have found a couple of bible quotes expressing people’s love for their mothers:

1. John 19:25-27 – ‘Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.’

As Jesus was facing his death he made sure that His mother would be looked after. He does this by selflessly appointing a disciple to be her son in replacement of himself. This shows how important her happiness was to him, right to the very end.

2. Genesis 21:1-3 – ‘Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.’

This is an example of a pure miracle. Sarah had given up on the idea of having a child of her own, and God grants her one which she therefore appreciates greatly after the long wait. I think this is a very joyful bible tale for Mothering Sunday!

3. Proverbs 31:25-30 – ‘Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” ‘

Every sentence in this quote is full of meaning. It describes the qualities of a mother: her wisdom; her ability to teach kindness above all else; her concern with the running of the household; and how she is never idle due to how busy mothers indeed are!

Her children grow up to call her blessed and respect her above themselves. It really is true that mothers ‘surpass them all’…
