God’s Valentine’s Day is EVERY day

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.  Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. – 1 John 4:7-8

God’s Valentine’s Day is EVERY day

Today I have been considering whether Valentine’s Day is as meaningful as it is made out to be, or just another commercial occasion. Is its purpose to be a day where we express our feelings towards others, or a way of retailers making more money?

I think it depends on the person and how you use it. Merely sending anonymous cards may be fun if you like mysteries, but I don’t think it is worthy of a special day designated to it. In my opinion, it should be an opportunity to show people how much they mean to you.

Remembering to give something to someone or telling them that you love them shows that you care. The great thing about Valentine’s Day is that it is the one day which exists to remind you to tell those special to you that you love them.

So, what would God say about Valentine’s Day?

This is hard and I don’t pretend to know the answer. In my opinion it would be a positive one if it involved sharing the overflowing love that He has given to us. (If you would like a prayer for this please see yesterday’s post.) God is expressing His love continually and I think He would like us to do the same.

Perhaps this year we should take something with us for the time after Valentine’s Day. In Lent, we are preparing for when God showed us His ultimate love at Easter. It would be nice to feel we can openly show this love in our everyday lives.

We could do this by spreading the Word or by sharing God’s love. Or maybe it would be nice to use the love God has given to you by showing it to those who need it, maybe by helping someone or letting someone know how much they mean to others.

This Valentine’s Day doesn’t just have to be about romance – a one off meal or a bouquet. These are nice, but wouldn’t it be great to continue these symbols of affection into our everyday lives?

After all, God is love. And moreover, God is continually loving. Let’s make love known always, and not just for Valentine’s Day.
